The Real Estate Agent's Guide to Letting Go

June 01, 2026•2 min read

What Happens When You Stop Trying to Force the Outcome

I've never considered myself a control freak. Ask anyone who works with me — I give people a lot of freedom. Ask my husband and he'll probably laugh and tell you I'm the least nosey person on the planet.

I've always been go-with-the-flow. Because the second I feel like I need to control someone, it usually means I don't trust them. And at this point in my life, if I don't trust you, you're probably not that close to me.

But here's where it gets interesting.

Controlling People vs. Controlling Situations

I recently caught myself trying to control a situation that was completely out of my hands. And when I sat with it, I realized something: I don't want to control people. I want to control situations — especially when they're not going how I imagined.

Sound familiar?

If you're a real estate agent, I know this hits home. You've been there. You're trying to force a deal to close. You're convincing a client to move forward when they clearly need more time. You're refreshing your inbox for the tenth time hoping for that signed contract.

You're gripping so tightly because you're afraid of what happens if you let go.

The Tighter You Grip, the Heavier It Gets

Here's what I've learned: the older I get, the more I realize that letting go makes life feel lighter. Not passive. Not careless. Just lighter.

There's a massive difference between being strategic and being controlling. Strategy says, "I've done everything I can. I've followed up. I've provided value. I've shown up with integrity." Control says, "But why isn't it working yet? Let me push harder. Let me send one more text. Let me fix this."

One serves your business. The other drains you.

A Mantra That Changed Everything for Me

I started repeating something to myself that shifted the way I operate in both business and life:

Everything in my life is working out for my highest and best good.

Whether you believe in God, the universe, or just life itself — there's a certain peace that comes when you trust that whatever is in your path is either teaching you, growing you, or shaping you in some way.

That deal that fell through? Maybe it made room for a better one. That client who ghosted? Maybe they weren't your person. That listing that didn't come together? Maybe the timing wasn't right — for them or for you.

Your Reminder This Week

If you're white-knuckling your way through a deal, a relationship, or a season in your business — this is your sign to take a step back.

Breathe. Release. Trust.

Let things happen without gripping so tightly. Your business doesn't need you to control every outcome. It needs you to stay aligned, stay consistent, and stay open to what's coming — even if it doesn't look exactly how you planned.
